The Fruitport baseball team has been snakebitten all week by hard-luck losses, and the Trojans were obviously tired of it.
It started on Tuesday when they lost both ends of a doubleheader to rival Spring Lake by one run. It continued on Thursday when they lost to the Lakers by one run again, this time in extra innings.
Their fortunes finally changed on Friday night, when the Trojans took all of their pent-up frustration out on Fremont, pounding the Packers 13-2 under the lights at Muskegon’s Marsh Field.
The biggest star of the show was sophomore pitcher Avery Lambers, who scattered three hits and struck out 10 in five innings on the mound.
The Trojans took the lead on an RBI sacrifice fly by Ryan Bosch in the first inning then added a run in the second on an RBI walk by Christian Kennedy.
Fremont tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third inning, then Fruitport answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning, sparked by a two-run single from Tommy Anderson.
The Trojans added five more runs in the fourth inning. Trevor Rusnak hit a two-run homer, Kennedy had an RBI single and Bosch followed with a two-run single.
The Trojans totaled 10 hits and eight walks in the game. Kennedy and Braxton Ward each drew two walks.
The big win took some of the sting away for the Trojans, who lost 6-5 to Spring Lake on Thursday on the final play of the game.
The score was tied in the bottom of the eighth inning when the Lakers scored the winning run on a Trojan error.
Kennedy, Anderson, Lambers and Bosch each collected two hits in the loss.
Fruitport, now 14-12 on the season, will visit Grand Rapids West Catholic in an O-K Blue conference matchup on Monday.
