Neither of the Fruitport track teams took home any trophies or first-place medals at their own Fruitport Invitational on Friday.
But both teams finished near the middle of the pack against talented competition, and lots of Fruitport athletes did very well.
As Trojan boys coach Randy Johnson put it, “Medals went to the top six individuals and top three relay teams. We brought home a lot of medals.”
In the boys competition, Fruitport finished fourth out of eight teams with 77.5 points. Berrien Springs won the boys championship with 120 points.
The Trojans had multiple athletes do well in several events.
In the high jump, for instance, Fruitport’s Evan Butler finished in second place with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches. Teammate Talon King was fourth while a third Trojan, Ethan Horan, finished sixth, so they all collected medals.
In the pole vault, Fruitport’s Levi Glynn and Alex Wilber finished second and third, respectively, both clearing 10 feet.
In the long jump, Nathan Carlisle took second place with a mark of 18-8, while SeanPaul O’Brien was fifth.
In the 400-meter dash, Glynn finished second with a time of 53.36.
In the discus, Fruitport’s Bradon Dornbos finished sixth. In the 1,600-meter run, Levi Bol took sixth.
In the girls competition, Fruitport took fifth place out of eight teams with 85 points. Ludington won the event with 166 points.
Fruitport’s Julia Smith finished in second place in both the long jump (14-3) and the 100-meter hurdles (17.23).
Tatum Dykstra finished second in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:34.29. Valerie Pollock took third place in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 13:04.78.
Tresa Dykstra was fourth in the 300-meter dash while Lauren Lee finished sixth.
Tatum Dykstra finished in fifth place in the 1,600-meter run. Lee finished fifth and Pollock took sixth in the 3,200-meter run.
Sophie Christopher was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.
Zoe German was fourth in the pole vault. Jada Wright was fourth and Genevieve Franklin was fifth in the long jump.
In the mixed boys-girls relay events, Fruitport’s team of Tresa Dykstra, Lauren Lee, Levi Glynn and Ryder Merkins was third in the 4 x 400, and the team of Tatum Dykstra, Valerie Pollock, Vincent Pollock and Levi Bol finished second in the 4 x 1,600.
