The Fruitport wrestling team is very young, with a roster full of underclassmen, and they have now gotten a taste of what it takes to be successful in the state tournament.

The Trojans impressed everyone last week by winning a Division 2 team district championship with victories over Fremont and Big Rapids. It was Fruitport’s second consecutive team district title, but last year the Trojans did it with more upperclassmen in the lineup.

The latest district title sent Fruitport to a Division 2 team regional tournament at Sparta High School on Wednesday, and that did not go nearly as well.

Fruitport’s Kyle Holt

The Trojans fell to powerful Greenville 69-7 in the semifinal round and ended the team portion of their season with a 13-11 record.

Fruitport had two wins in the match. Kyle Holt (126 pounds) defeated Greenville’s Connor Lewis 15-1 and Davis Johnson (132) defeated Greenville’s Ashton Waldorf 6-2.

It was not the end of the season for the entire team, because four Trojans remain alive in the state individual tournament and will compete in regionals on Saturday at Allendale High School.

Fruitport’s Davis Johnson

Despite the one-sided loss to Greenville, Fruitport Coach Chad Johnson said team districts and regionals were a very good experience for his young squad, which obviously has a very promising future.

“I told them how proud I was of them and how far they have come,” Johnson said. “After facing a tough team like Greenville, they kind of know the standard now. The goal going forward is to put in the work so we can go farther next year. I think this will make them want to work even harder in the offseason.”eddie
