FREMONT – To borrow some lyrics from a Beyonce song, the Fruitport wrestling team “may be young, but they ready.”

Fruitport only has three seniors and two juniors on its underclass-dominated team this season, but that didn’t stop the Trojans from capturing a second straight Division 2 team district championship on Thursday night at Fremont High School.

The Trojans started their big night by downing Fremont 50-30 in the semifinals, then beat Big Rapids 47-30 in the championship match.

“It’s special,” said Fruitport head coach Chad Johnson about the growth and potential of his young team. “We have a good group of young wrestlers. It’s only going to get better from here. Things like this are what we strive for and work for. It’s special to seize the opportunity.”

The Trojans’ semifinal match against Fremont was expected to be a barnburner, much like last season, when Fruitport edged out the Packers in the last match of the district finals to win the trophy.

But Fruitport had a much easier time of it this year.

Cooper Lengkeek (157 pounds) got things rolling for Fruitport with a pin victory just 1:20 into his match, giving the Trojans a 6-0 lead.

The Trojans dropped the next two matches via pin and forfeit, giving Fremont a 12-6 edge.

Xavier Kelly (190) got things back on track for Fruitport with a 7-4 victory to cut the Trojan deficit to 12-9.

Luke Westerlund (215) gave Fruitport a permanent lead by pinning his opponent with just three seconds left in the second round.

His victory seemed to get the rest of the Trojans revved up to finish off the Packers and head to the finals.

“It felt great,” Westerlund said. “We have a great team and we have a lot more to come. The team is really close this year, and I think my win helped bring the energy.”

Fruitport went on sweep the next three matches with pins by Jayden Perry (285), Phillip Stone-Tyler (106) and Zach Aardema (113). That left the Trojans with a commanding 33-12 lead.

Following a Trojan forfeit, Kyle Holt (126) picked up a 19-4 technical fall win, then the Trojans got pin victories from Joseph Hamilton (138) and Devin Workman (150) to seal up the win.

In the championship match against Big Rapids, the Trojans fell behind 12-0 on a forfeit and a pin before taking control.

Following two Big Rapids forfeits, Perry (285) pinned his opponent in just 1:43 to give Fruitport an 18-12 lead.

Stone-Tyler defeated his opponent in a wild 21-13 match to give Fruitport a 22-12 advantage. Aardema (113) pinned his opponent with 42 seconds remaining in the third period, making the score 28-12.

Fruitport forfeited at 120 pounds, cutting its lead to 28-18, then Holt (126) defeated his opponent 11-0 and Davis Johnson (132) won his match 13-1 to make the score 35-18.

Blair Zimmer (144) and Lengkeek (150) each pinned their opponents, giving Fruitport its final margin of victory.

After accepting the district trophy, Johnson said was proud of his wrestlers and the energy they brought throughout the night.

“It’s been our goal all week and we’ve keyed in on it,” the coach said. “The opportunity to win a district title is special and we wanted to do it for the school. It’s a big deal for Fruitport.”eddie
