FRUITPORT – The Fruitport girls basketball team hasn’t had many close games during a losing streak that has now reached 11 games.

So the Trojans could take some positives away from Tuesday’s 44-24 loss to Coopersville in O-K Blue conference action on their home court.

While the final score looks lopsided, the Trojans led after one quarter and were down just 27-20 entering the fourth.

But in the final eight minutes, Fruitport went 1-for-9 from the field and turned the ball over seven times while being outscored 17-4.

The loss drops the Trojans to 5-12 overall and 0-11 in conference play.

“We just didn’t get some of the breaks,” said Fruitport head coach Brian Packard. “We probably shot 18 percent and they probably shot 50 percent. It felt like everything they put up went in. That’s really frustrating, but we’re getting better every day.”

Things started out positive for the Trojans, who held the Broncos to just five first quarter points and held a 6-5 advantage at the first buzzer.

Things started to turn in the second quarter, however, as Fruitport was outscored 15-5, handing the Trojans a 20-11 halftime deficit.

A 9-7 third quarter advantage helped Fruitport narrow the deficit to seven points heading into the fourth. Izzy Hanson-Wilbur scored seven points in the third for the Trojans.

In the disastrous fourth quarter, Coopersville grabbed six offensive rebounds, which gave them a total of 22 on the night. Fruitport finished with nine offensive rebounds in the game.

Hanson-Wilbur led the Trojans with 12 points while Ashton Olson and Rhiannon Raleigh each totaled six points.

Fruitport will next travel to Allendale on Friday, where they’ll look to get their first win since Dec. 29.

“We’ve competed all year,” said Packard about how hard the girls are working despite the losing streak. “I think the moral victory aspect of things is over. We want to win, and we know we need to put four quarters together. I take a ton of responsibility in some of the letdowns. Our girls play so hard so often and deserve to win a game.”eddie
