After struggling through a frustrating losing streak, the Fruitport boys and girls bowling teams roared back into form on Wednesday with a pair of big wins over Coopersville in O-K Blue conference action.

The Fruitport girls won their second match of the season by a 16-14 score. The boys rolled to an easier 21-9 win.

“Our teams worked hard to beat a tough Coopersville team,” said Fruitport Coach Tim McKeeby. “We stayed out of our heads, kept positive, and bowled well. The coaching staff is extremely proud of our athletes and their determination to be the best bowlers they can be.”

The girls started off a little slow, winning only 4 of 10 possible points in the baker rounds.

But the Trojans came to life in the first singles round, winning four of five games. Posting victories were Lily Bontreger, Kaylynn Pavlige, Joe Pider and Kadie Juska. Bontreger and Pavlige won games in the second round, as well.

The Trojans collected 12 points in the singles rounds, one for each victory, four for winning the overall pin count in the first round, and two more for winning the combined pin count in singles.

They won the combined pin count by a narrow 1,199-1,129 score, providing their margin of victory.

All five Fruitport bowlers scored over 100 for both singles games. Joe Pider had the high score for the Trojans, a career-best 152 game.

The girls team improved to 2-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play.

The Fruitport boys had an easier time with Coopersville.

Like the girls, the boys only won 4 of 10 baker points, but poured it on to take control in the singles rounds.

Fruitport won all five games in the first round, with victories from Keenan Camp, Bradley Dekker, Zach Durakovic, Michael Hanson and Bradon Krohn.

Shane Brosnan took over as a sub midway through the first game trailing by 50 pins and rallied to get the win,

Hanson and Brosnan won games in the second round. Krohn rolled a season-high 256 game for Fruitport while Hanson rolled a 235 and Camp had a season-high game of 175,

The Trojans collected one point for each singles victory, eight points for winning the total pin count in each round, and two more points for winning the combined singles pin count.

The double victory was greeted with enthusiasm by Coach McKeeby.

“Our girls team has improved tremendously this season,” he said. “Our boys team will finish this season strong and do their best to return to the state finals.”eddie
