Second place was good enough to clinch a championship for the Fruitport competitive cheer team on Thursday.

The Trojans finished as runner-up in the final O-K Blue conference meet of the season. Grand Rapids West Catholic finished first with 719.16 points while Fruitport had 705.06.

But Fruitport won the first two conference meets and clinched the overall championship based on combined points from the three meets.

The conference title is the team’s first since 2006.

“This was one of our goals going into this season, and I’m so proud of this team for pushing to accomplish this!” said Trojans Coach Saqora Conklin.

Conklin credited junior Tayler Anderson for “so much hard work coming from her every single day. She’s an amazing athlete and a three-year starter for us.”

The coach also gave a nod to junior Gracie Farrell, saying “She brings the energy for us! In Rounds 1 and 3 she puts the power in with her facials and voice. She’s a huge strength on the mat and in the air.”

The Trojans celebrate after claiming the conference trophy on Thursday night.
