Sometimes ugly losses can throw athletes out of rhythm and wreck their confidence.

But Fruitport wrestlers Zach Aardema (113 pounds), Kyle Holt (120) and Cooper Lengkeek (150) bounced back beautifully after tough losses in Saturday’s Division 2 individual district tournament at Fremont High School and still qualified for regionals.

They finished third in their weight classes. Fruitport’s Phillip Stone-Tyler finished fourth at 103 pounds. All four Trojans will move on to compete at Saturday’s Division 2 individual regional tournament at Allendale High School, with a chance to qualify for the individual state finals.

Zach Aardema

Aardema won his first match by pin, lost by technical fall in the semifinals, but bounced back to pin his opponent in the consolation semifinals and Sparta’s Steven Schmid in the third-place match.

Holt followed a similar path, winning his first two matches by pin, losing in the semifinals by major decision, winning by decision in the consolation semifinals, then beating Sparta’s Zach DeKorne 6-4 in the third-place match.

Kyle Holt

Lengkeek won his first two matches by pin, lost by major decision in the semifinals, then rebounded and won the consolation semifinals and beat Hudsonville Unity Christian’s Benjamin Muckey 7-0 in the third-place match.

Stone-Tyler won his first match, lost his second, won in the consolation semifinals, then lost in the third-place match.

Cooper Lengkeek

Before advancing to individual regionals, the four Trojans will get back to team business on Wednesday when Fruitport competes in Division 2 team regionals at Sparta High School. The Trojans will face Greenville, with the winner advancing to the finals later on the same night.

Fruitport qualified for the team regionals by winning its second consecutive team district championship last week.
