The Fruitport wrestling team came up just short against rival Spring Lake on Wednesday, losing 33-30 in a dramatic O-K Blue conference dual match.

The competition was as close as it could possibly be, with Fruitport and Spring Lake each winning seven matches.

The narrow difference came in the types of wins that each team posted.

A regular win is worth three team points. Spring Lake gained 12 extra points with two pins (six extra points), one technical fall (two extra points), a major decision (one extra point) and a forfeit in one weight class (3 extra points).

Fruitport had nine extra points, with two pins and three major decisions.

Fruitport’s Luke Westerlund, who had two pins on Wednesday night.

In the end the forfeit at 190 pounds proved to be the downfall for the Trojans.

Fruitport winners against Spring Lake were Luke Westerlund (215 pounds), Phillip Stone-Tyler (113), Zack Aardema (120), Kyle Holt (126), Davis Johnson (132), Blair Zimmer (144) and Xavier Kelly (175).

Stone-Tyler and Westerlund won by pins.

The Trojans had an easier time in their non-conference match, downing Mona Shores 49-24.

Fruitport winners against the Sailors were Cooper Lengkeek (150), Devin Workman (157), Easton Fett (165), Xavier Kelly (175), Stone-Tyler (120), Zimmer (144) and Westerlund (215). Fruitport won two matches by forfeit.
