Fruitport wrestler Zack Aardema, recently slowed by an injury, rebounded in a big way on Saturday, winning the 113-pound championship at the Fruitport Legends Tournament.

Aardema (pictured above in action) pinned Orchard View’s Aquilla Payne in 4:27 in the championship match. He posted a 3-0 record on the day and is currently 10-2 on the season.

“Zack wrestled a great tournament,” said Fruitport Coach Chad Johnson. ‘He had been out the last couple of weeks due to injury. We worked hard getting him ready to compete again this week and his hard work was showcased. We are really excited to see Zack continue to compete at a high level.”

Fruitport finished fifth as a team in the tournament, which featured a lot of good wrestlers from strong programs.

The Trojans totaled 92.5 points. Greenville won the championship with 191.1 points.

Three other Trojans placed and won medals for their efforts.

Kyle Holt finished second at 126 pounds, Davis Johnson was third at 132 pounds and Blair Zimmer was fourth at 144 pounds.

“We take a lot of pride in hosting a tough tournament,” Johnson said. “It prepares our guys for the postseason. Unfortunately some of our guys lost in the consolation semifinals, but I’m still really proud of how we wrestled. There were a lot of things to build on as we continue to get where we need to be for the postseason run.”eddie
