The Fruitport wrestling team got off to a great start to the new season on Wednesday, blowing past Zeeland West 57-21 and Grand Rapids West Catholic 63-18 in a pair of non-conference dual matches.

Against Zeeland West, the Trojans won six different weight classes with pins. Getting the quickest pins were Luke Westerlund (215 pounds) in 27 seconds, Ryder Chan (106) in 35 seconds and Zach Aardema (126) in 45 seconds.

Also collecting pins for Fruitport were Blair Zimmer (144), Cooper Lengkeet (157) and Easton Fett (165).

The Trojans’ Kyle Holt (132) won his match by technical fall while Davis Johnson (126) won by major decision.

Only one Fruitport wrestler actually lost a match. The three other Zeeland West wins came by forfeit.

Against West Catholic, most of Fruitport points came via forfeit.

Johnson and Westerlund both pinned their opponents while Holt won a 5-4 thriller in the 132-pound match.

“Our team looked good tonight for opening night,” said Fruitport coach Chad Johnson. “We had three starters out tonight, and the team stepped up after having to make a few adjustments and move a few guys up to fill the holes.

“We will watch some film and clean up some things before we are tested this weekend with some tough competition.”eddie
