It’s hard enough to play one tough O-K Blue conference opponent per night, let alone two.

But the Fruitport volleyball team did a pretty good job of dealing with that challenge on Tuesday, losing a tough four-set match to Hamilton, then rebounding and fighting their way to a grueling four-set win over rival Spring Lake.

The Trojans lost their first two sets to Hamilton, 25-21 and 25-16, clawed back to win a very close third set 26-24, then lost the fourth set 25-17.

That might have zapped most teams of their fight, but the Trojans kept working against Spring Lake and gutted out a win.

Fruitport won the first set 25-19, lost the second 25-20, then clinched the match with two nail-biting wins, 25-23 and 30-28.

Sadie Haase led Fruitport in kills with 27 while Ashton Olson added 13. Gracelynn Olson had 60 assists and Tara Sweet and Lauren Riedel each served four aces.

Defensively, Riedel had 44 digs and Olson had 23. Haase had three blocks while Emma Danicek and Ellie Stroup had two apiece.

“The team did a great job tonight fighting through against two more tough opponents,” said Fuitport coach Nicole Bayle. “I was very proud of the way that we moved through mistakes and kept fighting. This team just keeps growing and improving!”
