From a team perspective, cross country involves more than just having a runner or two finish near the top in a race.

It requires as many runners a possible finishing as high as possible in the final standings.

The Fruitport boys cross country team did well in that respect on Saturday, placing five runners in the top 30 out of 55 runners at the Sparta Invitational.

Vincent Pollock

Four of the five Trojans competing in the event set personal best times.

The Trojans finished with 112 points and a fourth place finish out of seven teams. Forest Hills Eastern took first place with 41 points.

Fruitport’s Vincent Pollock finished eighth overall with a time of 16:44.34.

Ethan Horan

Ethan Horan finished 24th overall with a time of 17:53.68, followed by Landon Johnson (25th, 17:57.32), Levi Bol (27th, 17:59.50) and Alex Wilber (28th, 18:06.46).

Both the Fruitport boys and girls teams had a lot of runners set personal best times, which pleased Randy Johnson, who coaches both squads.

“The teams ran well, both placing fourth in their divisions against some tough state-ranked teams,” Johnson said.
