The Fruitport volleyball team had a good outing on Saturday, posting a 3-2 record and finishing as runner-up in its own Fruitport Invitational.
The Trojans split in pool play, beating Montague 25-20, 25-16, then falling to Gull Lake 25-14, 26-19.
They turned it on in bracket play, beating Whitehall 25-21, 25-18, then Traverse City West in three sets, 16-25, 25-22, 17-15.
The Trojans fell to Mona Shores 25-23, 25-16 in the tournament championship match.
Sadie Haase led the Fruitport offense with 38 kills, Ashton Olson added 17 and Ellie Stroup had 13.
Lauren Reidel served up seven aces, Gracelynn Olson added six and Emma Fecher had five.
Olson set up the attack with 83 assists.
Defensively, Reidel had 62 digs, Emma Fecher had 25 and Kendal Kolberg added 22.
Haase blocked seven shots while Emma Danicek and Olson stopped five and four, respectively.
“Today we learned what we are capable of as a team,” said Fruitport coach Nicole Bayle. “I have had some really high expectations for this group and today we became a real team.
“To be successful at our home tournament was one of our goals this season and being in the finals was awesome. I am so proud of our team, these girls represented well today!”
