The undefeated Fruitport soccer team opened conference play on Monday with a 3-1 victory over Hamilton at Ken Erny Field.

Braylon Marshall opened the scoring for the Trojans in the first half, with an assist from Jorge Burgos-Yack.

Burgos-Yack added a goal of his own later in the half – his seventh in the last two games – and Fruitport led 2-0 at halftime.

Elliott Effken scored the Trojans’ final goal in the second half before Hamilton found the net late in the game.

Goalie Logan Werschem made two saves for the Trojans, who outshot the Hawkeyes 13-3.

Fruitport is now 6-0 on the season.

While he was happy to get the win, Trojans Coach Dan Hazekamp said his team could have performed better.

“I thought we had moments of solid play, but overall we left some things out there,” Hazekamp said. “Credit to Hamilton for continuing to battle throughout the game.

“Hopefully this is an effort we can build on as we travel to play a tough Holland Christian team on Thursday.”
