The few days off during the All-Star break was not enough to cool off the Muskegon Clippers.

The Clippers returned to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of the Michigan Monarchs on the road, 13-1 and 7-6.

The opener was an easy win for the Clippers, who scored four runs in the third inning, six in the fourth and three more in the sixth.

Aaron Piasecki and Nicolas Hawkins each knocked in three runs for Muskegon while Colin Cornwell had two RBIs. Pitcher Drew Zittell pitched all seven innings, scattering eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The second game was much closer. The score was tied 6-6 in the top of the eighth when Hawkins was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk.

The Clippers’ Colin Cornwell had a big day at the plate on Wednesday.

The Monarchs advanced the potential tying run to second base in the bottom of the inning but could not get the tying run.

Cornwell had two hits and three RBIs while Sam Lisiak knocked in two runs for Muskegon.

Pitchers Ryan Chamberlain, Ben Alderson and Gavin Sitarz combined to get the work done on the mound.

The first-place Clippers, now 28-5, will close out the regular season with five big home games this weekend.

They will host the Monarchs on Friday night, then will have back-to-back doubleheaders against the second-place Lima Locos on Saturday and Sunday, hoping to nail down the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League North Division title.
