After coming perilously close to suffering their first loss of the season on Saturday – which was avoided by a thrilling ninth inning walk-off rally – the Muskegon Clippers kept their great season rolling on Sunday with a dominating 14-2 victory over the Michigan Monarchs on the road.

All of Muskegon’s runs came in the first two innings – five in the first and nine in the fifth. The 12-run margin gave the Clippers a shortened seven-inning mercy-rule victory, their second of the season.

The Clippers improved to 8-0 and remained in first place alone atop the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League’s North Division standings. Muskegon remains just ahead of the Sandusky Ice Haulers (7-2) and the Lima Locos (7-3).

The Clipper’s Colin Cornwell, who knocked in five runs in the Sunday victory.

Muskegon will play a key three-game series on the road against Sandusky on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before returning home next weekend.

The Clippers were led offensively by Colin Cornwell, who had two hits and knocked in five runs.

Brandon Scheurer had three hits and two RBIs while Caleb Sanders added a two-run homer.

The Clippers totaled 10 hits in the game.

Muskegon pitching was typically stingy, with starter Drew Zittel tossing five innings while scattering four hits and striking out six with no walks.  Blake Gedrich pitched two innings, allowing two hits while striking out two.
