Fruitport junior tennis standout Grace Sweet will be a player to watch next spring.

Sweet made that pretty clear with her play last week at the Division 3 state finals in Ann Arbor.

She finished with a 1-1 record in No. 1 singles, which included an easy victory in her first match and a spirited battle against a top player in her final match.

Sweet defeated Grace Clearwater of Allegan 6-1, 6-2 in her first match before falling to Detroit Country Day’s Sophia Grzesiak, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, 6-0, 6-4.

Fruitport’s Grace Sweet after winning first place at the city tournament earlier this season.

She trailed 5-2 in the second set against Grzesiak before winning two games to make the outcome close.

Sweet’s effort was complicated by the fact that she had to wait 5 ½ hours to play her first match on a hot, muggy day with temperatures in the 90s.

She finished her outstanding season with a 24-2 record and regional, conference and city championships.

With all of those accomplishments as a junior, there’s no telling what Sweet might pull off as a senior.

“Grace pulled out some great points and inspired play to get to 5-4 before bowing out,” Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher said about Sweet’s last match. “It was a really hard-fought match to end her great season at 24-2. I was very proud of her play right up to the end.”
