The Fruitport softball team ended a fun season on Saturday with a 10-1 loss to Coopersville in the Division 2 district tournament at Sparta High School.

Fruitport collected six hits in the game, including three from Olive Staal and two for Teagan Schultz, both seniors playing in their final game.

Kadence Springstead, another senior who was supposed to be the team’s top pitcher this year but missed much of the season with an injury, got back on the mound for the final game.

Fruitport’s Olive Staal, who had three hits in her final varsity game.

“I shared with my team at the end of the game how proud I was of our seniors, how they finished and how they set an example for our underclassmen,” said Fruitport Coach Bob Dorman. “Olive has been hitting the ball extremely hard, Teagan has been getting base hit after base hit, and then Kadence coming back and playing defense, but more remarkably how she came back and pitched for us.

“It made my heart so proud of these three to see them finish the way they did, regardless of the score.”

Fruitport finished the season with a 16-20 record, which is pretty remarkable, considering the Trojans lost 9 of their first 11 games.

With only the three seniors graduating, the Trojans should be in great shape to take a big step forward next spring.

“I told the underclassmen that next season starts on Monday,” Dorman said. “I encouraged them to live in the weight room and keep getting better.”
