After suffering their first loss of the season on Tuesday, the Muskegon Clippers bounced back in dramatic fashion on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over the Sandusky Ice Haulers and secured their hold on first place.

The Clippers only managed three hits for the second straight night, but it proved to be enough.

They trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh inning, then scored all three of their runs with two outs.

Brandon Scheurer reached first on an error, Sheehan O’Connor was hit by a pitch, then Colin Cornwell doubled both runners home. Donovan Rinehart capped the big inning with an RBI single.

The Clippers’ lead was in deep peril in the bottom of the ninth when Sandusky loaded the bases with only one out, but Clippers relief pitcher Gavin Sitarz struck one batter out, then Scheurer took the mound and struck the final batter out to preserve the victory.

Muskegon starting pitcher Daniel Gutierrez gave up only one hit with six strikeouts and two walks over six innings.

The Clippers improved to 9-1 on the season and remain atop the Great Lakes Collegiate League’s North Division. Lima is in second place at 9-3 while Sandusky is 8-3.

Muskegon and Sandusky will play the third and final game of their series on Thursday night in Ohio, then the Clippers will return home for Friday and Saturday night games at Marsh Field.
