The longer the season goes on, the hotter Fruitport’s Olive Staal is getting at the plate.

Staal totaled six hits on Saturday, including four in the second game, to lead the Fruitport softball team to a pair of wins over Montague in the Larry Cantu Invitational played at Fruitport High School.

Fruitport pounded out 13 hits in a 13-2 win in the first game. Staal knocked in a run in the first inning, then added another RBI in a five-run second inning. Kadence Springstead, Teagan Schultz, and Maddy Khonke also had RBIs in the big inning.

Staal, Kohnke, Schultz, Brylee Dewitt, and Ash Olson had two hits apiece.

Brooklyn Russell pitched the win, scattering four hits and striking out five in five innings.

The Trojans crowned their day with a 10-6 victory over the Wildcats.

Staal was 4-for-4 at the plate, with a single in the first inning, a double in the second, and singles in the third and fifth innings.

The Trojans took control with four runs in the first two innings. Olson doubled in a run, Staal singled in another and Kendall Lee had an RBI walk in the first. Staal added an RBI single in the second.

Fruitport added two more runs in the fifth inning. One scored on a DeWitt groundout and another came in on a Tatum Anderson single.

The Trojans had 11 hits in the game, with Olson collecting two.

Russell pitched another win in the second game, going all seven innings while scattering six hits, striking out 10 and walking one.

“I showed up at the field in the morning, it was cold out, and I wondered how that would affect how the girls would play,” said Fruitport Coach Bob Dorman. “Well it definitely didn’t affect them. We hit very well. For the most part we also played great defense and had great pitching from Brooklyn. I’M very proud of how we played today.”
