Fruitport sophomore Julia Smith continued her great season on Friday, capturing first place and a championship medal in the 100-meter hurdles at the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association City Track Meet at Mona Shores High School.
Smith finished with a time of 17.42, ahead of Montague’s Amanda Cedarquist (17.51) and Ravenna’s Abigail McCabe (18.13).
Several other Fruitport athletes also turned in good performances against the best competition in the area.
Junior Tatum Dykstra finished third in two individual events – the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run. Junior Tresa Dykstra finished third in the 400-meter run.
The Trojans’ 400-meter relay team of Tatum Dykstra, Tresa Dykstra, Valerie Pollock and Lauren Lee also finished third.
Fruitport’s Jada Wright finished second in the long jump. Smith finished fourth in the long jump while Pollock was fourth in the 3,200-meter run.
In the boys’ competition, Fruitport junior Levi Glynn had the best finish in his event, taking second place in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, a personal record.
The Trojans’ 4×800-meter relay team of Levi Bol, Ryder Merkins, Johnathon McMullin and Vincent Pollock finished third.

Ryder Merkins was fourth in the 800-meter run while Vincent Pollock took fifth place in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run.
Payton Flores finished in fourth place in the discus competition.
Overall the Fruitport girls finished fourth in the team standings with 53 points. Whitehall won the title with 93 points.
The Fruitport boys finished sixth with 37 points. Whitehall took first place with 188 points.
“The Fruitport coaches are very proud of our athletes,” said Fruitport track coach Tim McKeeby. “The competition at the city meet is always tough, however, Fruitport proved that we can compete with the best.
“Our athletes’ training prepared them for this event and their mindset was focused on exceeding expectations, and they did just that. Great job, Trojan Track!”
