The three seniors on the Fruitport softball team – Olive Staal, Teagan Schultz and Kadence Springstead – all had big moments on Tuesday in their final regular season game.

The Trojans overcame an early deficit and beat Newaygo 10-4 in the opener of the non-conference doubleheader. Fruitport took control by scoring five runs in the third inning. Staal knocked in one of those runs with a single while Springstead knocked in two more with a double.

Schultz led Fruitport at the plate with three hits in the game. The Trojans totaled 13 hits.

Brooklyn Russell pitched the win on the mound, scattering eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.

The Fruitport seniors were not available for Game 2 because they attended a special event with their classmates, but the rest of the Trojans picked up the slack.

Fruitport’s Olive Staal

Fruitport trailed 8-7 in the fourth inning when Maddy Kohnke knocked in two runs to give her team the lead.

The Trojans pulled away with 10 more runs in the fifth inning. Russell, Brylee Dewitt, Abby LaPres, Maya Aldridge, Marlee Veltman and  Ash Olson all had RBIs in the big inning.

Olson also had a home run in the first inning for Fruitport, which had 12 hits in the game.

Kohnke pitched the win, scattering four hits over five innings while striking out two.

The Trojans now head to Saturday’s Division 2 district tournament at Sparta High School, in an effort to win a trophy and keep their season alive.

Fruitport will face Sparta at 10 a.m., with the winner advancing to the 2 p.m. finals against the winner of the Spring Lake-Allendale semifinal.
