The Fruitport softball team, which struggled pretty badly earlier in the season, is starting to turn the corner.
The latest evidence came on Thursday when the Trojans used great pitching, perfect defense and some timely hitting to beat Fremont 3-0 in non-conference action.
[1]Brooklyn Russell was dominant on the mound for the Trojans, throwing a complete-game shutout while scattering seven hits. She struck out nine batters while only walking one.
Teagan Schultz led the Fruitport offense with two hits, including a solo home run in the first inning.
The Trojans played an error-free game in the field, with Ash Olson leading the way with 11 clean chances.
[2]Fruitport, now 6-10, has won four of its last five games after starting the season with a 1-7 record.
“As I shared with the team last night, we made the plays and we made the outs that they gave us – it’s really a simple game!” said Fruitport Coach Bob Dorman. “It was a great pitching performance by Brooklyn, but also when they put the ball in play her teammates backed her up by making the plays and getting the outs.”
