The Fruitport girls soccer team has sprung back to life at the best possible time.

After winning only one of its previous nine games, the Trojans suddenly have a two-game winning streak following Monday’s 3-1 victory over Hamilton in O-K Blue action.

Fruitport opened the scoring in the first minute of the game when Emerson VerMerris scored on a well-timed pass from Alexa Hanson-Wilbur.

Mikayla Belasco added another goal and the Trojans led 2-0 at halftime.

Fruitport’s Emerson VerMerris, who had a goal and an assist in Monday’s victory.

Mallory Smith scored Fruitport’s final goal with about seven minutes left in the game, with an assist from VerMerris.

Fruitport was on its game defensively, holding the Hawkeyes to just three shots. Kayla Kolberg, Lauren Riedel, Grace Olson, Joslyn Baldwin and Kenzie Pate were credited for playing strong on the back line.

Reliable goalie Riley Kettel stopped two shots for Fruitport.

The victory followed Friday’s 1-0 win over Western Michigan Christian. The momentum will serve the Trojans well when they open Division 2 district play at home on Wednesday against Coopersville.

“The team really stepped up today,” said Fruitport Coach Chris Belasco. “Offensively we were moving the ball really well. The girls are really implementing the ideas we are working on in practice. I think it really showed in the opening minute of the game when we recovered the ball quickly and connected on five quick passes to put a player in a great position to score. Defensively we had a great game, also.”
