The Fruitport boys golf team has shown progress against some tough competition over the past two O-K Blue conference jamborees.

Last Friday the Trojans finished in seventh place against conference opponents with a team score of 174 at Western Greens Golf Course. Ryan Sloan led Fruitport with a 40 and finished 11th overall in the individual standings. Chase Sullivan shot a 43 (17th individually), followed by Macen Benderman (45), Hayden Winskas (47), Andres Cribley-Cotto and Tyler Carlson (each 49).

On Monday the Trojans shot a slightly worse score, 176 as a team, but moved up to a fifth-place finish at Spring Lake Country Club.

Sloan and Winskas paced the Trojans by each shooting a 43, good for a tie for 16th place in the individual standings. Sullivan shot a 44, followed by Cribley-Cotto (49), and Cole Woodard (59).

“Our guys started incredibly well,” said Fruitport Coach Aaron Gregory about Monday’s competition in Spring Lake. “Through five holes we were just a couple strokes out of second place and were looking at a great finish, but over the last three holes it was if the wheels fell off. I can’t imagine what might happen if all our guys showed up and played nine solid holes.

“I am proud of how they continue to fight and I’m still hopeful we will have at least one day when it all comes together. Hopefully, that is at the conference tournament and or the regional in a couple weeks.”
