FRUITPORT – If the Fruitport baseball team can produce offensively like it did on Thursday, the Trojans could have a very interesting end to their season.

The Trojans have had solid pitching and defense throughout the spring, but have been inconsistent when it comes to putting crooked numbers on the scoreboard.

But they did not struggle on Thursday, pounding out 14 hits, resulting in a run in the first inning, four in the fifth and four more in the sixth against Hamilton.

The result was an impressive 9-0 victory, which gave the Trojans a measure of revenge after losing two games in a doubleheader at Hamilton on Tuesday.

Fruitport, now 10-14 on the season and 6-12 in O-K Blue conference competition, will play in the Holland West Ottawa Invitational tournament on Saturday.

Fruitport’s Ryan Bosch led the Trojans with three hits, including a mammoth home run to dead center field. He knocked in four runs and scored three himself.

“I wanted to jump out and try to get something I liked on the first pitch,” Bosch said about his long home run. “He left it up in the zone and I took that one.

“I feel like the tables are starting to turn for us as a team and we are starting to get the feel on what pitches we would like at each plate appearance.”

Tommy Anderson added three hits for Fruitport, including a double, while Avery Lambers, Christian Kennedy and Jax Flynn had two hits apiece.

Kennedy was also solid on the mound, tossing six innings while allowing no runs on two hits and striking out six batters. Lambers pitched one inning of relief.

“I think I pitched pretty well, and I had a great defense behind me,” Kennedy said. “I had a no-hitter going but hung a curveball and the kid had a pretty good swing at it. Some balls were hit into the gaps, but the defense was there to make the plays.”

The Trojans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Bosch’s monster solo home run. Fruitport had a chance to add more runs in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, but the frame ended on an infield fly out.

Fruitport exploded in the fifth inning with four runs on five hits to take a 5-0 lead. Bosch extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-run single and later scored on an error, and Andrew Spyke hit an RBI double.

Fruitport added another four runs in the sixth inning. Bosch, Brady French and Anderson each had RBI singles, then Fruitport scored its ninth and final run on a wild pitch.

Hamilton had two chances to score. Tyler Berkimer hit a two-out double in the fifth inning but was stranded at second base. The Hawkeyes had runners on second and third in the sixth inning but again failed to score.

“We came ready to play and our pitching has always been our strong point,” said Fruitport Coach Nick Reed. “When we are getting our hits together, we are going to come full force. I knew that today if we stayed the course and battled we would string a couple more runs together.”
