The Fruitport baseball team built some momentum for Saturday’s Division 2 district tournament by pulling out an 8-5 victory over Sparta on Tuesday in its final regular season game.

The game was tied 4-4 in the fifth inning when Fruitport’s Cody Nash rippled a two-run double, then Trevor Rusnak added another RBI double to give the Trojans their winning runs.

Nash, Andrew Spyke and Ryan Bosch each had two hits for Fruitport.

Bosch got the win in the mound, pitching three innings of relief while striking out five. Christian Kennedy finished the game and got the save.

“We started slow but fortunately our bats picked up and kept us in the game,” said Fruitport Coach Nick Reed said about Tuesday’s win. “We cleaned some things up, and we’re looking to carry that into districts.”

The Trojans, now 13-17 with a three-game winning streak, will head to districts on Saturday at Oakridge High School to battle for a trophy.

Fruitport will face Whitehall at noon in a semifinal matchup, with the winner advancing to the 2 p.m. finals against the survivor of the Spring Lake-Oakridge semifinal.
