Brady French singled in the seventh inning and knocked in the winning run, giving the Fruitport baseball team an exciting 6-5 victory over Oakridge on Saturday in the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association City Tournament.

The Trojans trailed headed into the fifth inning but scored three runs to tie the score at 5-5. French knocked in a run with a sacrifice bunt, the Trojans scored on an error, and another scored on a double by Ryan Bosch.

Fruitport totaled seven hits in the game, with Bosch collecting three of them. Pitcher Christian Kennedy got the win, scattering three hits over four innings.

The Trojans lost their second game in the tournament 5-1 to Mona Shores.

Jax Flynn, Avery Lambers, Kennedy and Bosch each had one hit in the loss. Dillon McWilliams and Lambers pitched for the Trojans.

Fruitport Coach Nick Reed, whose team has been inconsistent at the plate, was pleased with the bats in the win over Oakridge.

“We played better today and strung together some hits,” the coach said. “Avery and Christian pitched well against Oakridge and kept us in the game and our bats came through when we needed it.

“Dillon started against Mona shores and threw well, considering he hasn’t pitched much this year. He battled and kept it close. We just couldn’t cash in on the opportunities we had. But we are giving ourselves chances and the guys continue to work to get better each day.”

The Trojans, now 9-10 on the season, will host Grand Rapids West Catholic in an O-K Blue conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
