Fruitport’s Brooklyn Russell apparently has a rubber arm, because she’s been pitching a ton of innings this season and consistently getting the job done.

Russell was at the top of her game on Thursday, pitching all seven innings in both games and leading the Trojans to a doubleheader sweep of Greenville in non-conference action.

She struck out 11 with no walks in the opener, which the Trojans won 4-1.

Olive Staal led Fruitport at the plate, going 4-for-4, while Ash Olson also had multiple hits. The Trojans totaled 10 base hits in the game.

Russell had a lot left in the tank for Game 2, scattering eight hits while striking out eight with no walks.

Fruitport pounded out eight hits in the contest. Russell, Staal and Madyson Proud each had two. The Trojans stole seven bases in the nightcap with Teagan Schultz swiping two of them.

After starting the season with a worrisome 1-7 record, the suddenly hot Trojans are 10-12.

“Great wins for the Lady Trojans tonight, going on the road and getting a sweep,” said Fruitport Coach Bob Dorman. “We really played well tonight. We took the outs they gave us and that makes a big difference.”
