FRUITPORT — A difficult first half was too much to overcome for the Fruitport girls soccer team in a loss to Allendale Wednesday night.

The Trojans fell behind 4-0 in the first half and lost 5-1 in a consolation game of the O-K Blue conference tournament.

Fruitport had beaten Allendale 4-3 earlier this season but couldn’t find the same success this time around.

“The first half was a bit disappointing,” said Fruitport coach Chris Belasco. “We didn’t transition well from Monday’s game against West Catholic to this game, tactically.

“Mentally, we were not in some positions we should have been in. We gave up a couple of easy goals and giving up a couple of easy goals takes a toll mentally on them.”

The Trojans had a few scoring chances early in the game but couldn’t convert. Allendale then scored on a counterattack at the 35:53 mark to take the lead and controlled the rest of the first half.

“We need to stick to our game plan,” Belasco said. “They get a little rattled and panicked and they start trying to play outside of what we’ve been preaching. That’s something we need to work on.”

While the first half didn’t go the Trojans’ way, Belasco said the team played better in the second half after making some adjustments. That showed on the scoreboard as well, with both teams managing one goal after the break.

“We made some adjustments at halftime, so the second half I think we were in better positions to counterattack and shut down some of that stuff,” Belasco said. “It stinks that it took until halftime to refocus, but I think the second half we came out and played how we should have been playing from the get-go and that’s a positive for us.

“We just need to focus, lock that stuff in early and not wait so long.”

Allendale led 4-0 at halftime and added a fifth goal six minutes into the second half to lead 5-0. Fruitport’s lone goal was scored by Alexa Hanson-Wilbur with 29 minutes left in the game.

The Trojans had a few scoring chances down the stretch, but couldn’t mount a comeback.

Riley Kettel made several nice saves in the net for Fruitport.

Fruitport is now 5-9-2 on the season.
