Three singles players from the Fruitport girls tennis team demonstrated their abilities on Wednesday with strong performances against Grand Rapids West Catholic.

The Trojans swept the top three singles matches, although they lost the overall match 5-3.

Fruitport’s Grace Sweet (No. 1 singles) beat West Catholic’s Kayla Bouwhuis 6-2, 6-0.

Rachel Hines (No. 2 singles) fought hard in the first set to gain a 7-6 win over Agat Stasiuk, then cruised to a 6-1 victory in the second set.

Fruitport’s Audra Peterson

Audra Peterson (No. 3 singles) put away West Catholic’s Ella Bocian 6-4, 6-3.

The Trojans fell at No. 4 singles and in all four doubles matches.

“We played a much better match than Monday, with more intensity and a better battle within the points,” said Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher. ”Grace, Rachel and Audra all played complete matches. The girls were solid from the baseline and moved well to finish points.

“A couple of our doubles teams demonstrated improved play to make their matches much closer than the scores indicated.”
