Fruitport tennis players Grace Sweet and Rachel Hines did a great job of defending their home court on Saturday.

Sweet and Hines both posted 3-0 records and won flight championships at the Fruitport Invitational.

Sweet, playing No. 1 singles against the best players from the other schools, won all three of her matches in straight sets.

She downed Cadillac’s Haylee Groen 7-5, 6-1; Whitehall’s Elizabeth Bentz 6-0, 6-0; and Ludington’s Hannah Glanville 6-2-6-2 in the finals.

Hines, playing No. 2 singles, had to work a little harder for her tournament medal.

She defeated Ludington’s Mia Pung 7-6, 6-1; Whitehall’s Mackenzie Hall 6-3, 6-4; and Cadillac’s Jaylyn Hamilton 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 in a tie-breaker title match.

Fruitport’s Nanami Hoshino was the runner-up at No. 4 singles. She rallied to beat Cadillac’s Sara Outman in a tough 3-6, 7-6, 10-7 tiebreaker match and Whitehall’s Royonna Knutson 6-4, 6-3. She fell to Ludington’s Claire Shoup in the finals, 6-1, 6-2.

The Trojans finished in third place in the team standings with 9 points. Ludington won the title with 17, followed by Cadillac (16) and Whitehall (6).

Fruitport’s Rachel Hines

“Many matches we played were close and could have gone our way to change the outcome for our team,” said Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher. “Grace Sweet is beginning to get back her form and her shot-making and Rachel Hines is figuring out how to win some of the tight matches. Nanami Hoshino is adapting her tennis game here in the United States.

“The team is still looking for consistency, that complete team victory, in which we all contribute to the team success together.”

The Trojans will be back in action on Monday afternoon at Spring Lake.
