The Fruitport girls tennis team opened up its season with an impressive 7-1 victory over Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills on Tuesday.

The Trojans won three of the four singles flights and swept all four doubles flights. The top three singles players only lost a combined two out of 37 games.

Grace Sweet won the No. 1 singles match over Kenowa Hills’ Madison Mersman 6-0, 6-0.

Rachel Hines won her match at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0. Audra Peterson took the No. 3 singles match 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, Aubre Johnson and Lynnea Olson (No. 1), Abby Poort and Gracie Ferrell (No. 2) and Bailey Poort and Tara Sweet (No. 3) won their matches in straight sets. Rylee Rufener and Alyssa Ballard (No. 4) had to go to a third-set tiebreaker, which they won 10-4.

The Trojans will return to action on Saturday at the East Kentwood Invitational.

“I was pleased that the girls demonstrated some resolve to gain a team victory, even with some first match butterflies,” said Fruitport Coach Brad Busscher. “We look forward to Saturday and our opportunity to play multiple quality opponents at East Kentwood.”
