MUSKEGON – Sometimes all you need is one magical inning to jump-start your season, and for the Fruitport baseball team, that inning came late on Friday night “Under the Lights” at Marsh Field.

The Trojans trailed 1-0 in the early innings, gave up four runs in the sixth, and went to the top of the seventh and final inning facing a 5-0 deficit.

Then Fruitport did the unthinkable, scoring 10 runs in the seventh on five hits, three walks, two errors and a hit batter to walk away with a thrilling 10-5 come-from-behind victory over Reeths-Puffer at the historic Muskegon ballpark.

The Trojans improved to 5-7 on the season.

“We have had good at bats and have been getting better,” said Fruitport coach Nick Reed, whose team has struggled a bit in the plate this season. “We went up with a plan in the seventh inning. We were going to make them throw a lot of pitches and we executed. We got the tying run on second and our big guy came through with just a missile right up the middle.”

Fruitport’s Brady French drives the ball toward third.

That “big guy” was Ryan Bosch, whose heroics came toward the end of the big inning.

The Trojans started their 10-run rally with a hit batter, a single, a strikeout and a walk to load the bases with one out.

Cody Nash produced the first run for the Trojans with a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to 5-1.

Dillon McWilliams followed with another bases-loaded RBI walk, then Braxton Ward hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 5-3 with Fruitport down to its last out.

That last out didn’t come for a while.

Ryan Bosch hustles up the line toward first after putting the ball in play.

Christian Kennedy singled to reload the bases for Bosch, who promptly slashed a 1-1 pitch through the middle of the infield for a two-run single to complete a five-run comeback and tie the game.

“I have been working a lot during the offseason on batting and it definitely showed tonight,” said Bosch, who verbally committed to play baseball at the University of Michigan earlier this week. “I sat back and got the pitch that I wanted and just drove it. I have played a lot of baseball, and this was one of my special moments.”

The Trojans continued to pour it on after Bosch’s hit, taking advantage of an R-P error to score two runs and take a 7-5 lead, then adding runs on an RBI single by Andrew Spyke and a two-run triple by Jax Flynn.

Suddenly Fruitport had turned a five-run deficit into a five-run lead, and three R-P outs later, the Trojans had the win.

“It just got contagious,” Reed said. “It was a big team win and a big momentum builder with that seventh inning. Maybe we should make our home games here under the lights at Marsh Field. We have scored 25 runs in the two games played here.”

French dives to get back to first base.

The Rockets opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a run on a Fruitport error.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Reeths-Puffer added four runs on six hits. Holden Earnest and Catcher Earnest each had RBI singles while David Wilheim knocked in two runs with a hit.

R-P’s five-run lead was only three outs away from becoming a victory, but the Trojans had other ideas in the seventh inning.

The Trojans were paced offensively by Kennedy and Avery Lambers with two hits apiece. Lambers and Brady French scored two runs apiece.

Fruitport shortstop Dillon McWilliams tries to pick an R-P runner off second.

Ward got the win on the mound, allowing one hit in 1 2/3 innings of relief while striking out one. Starting pitcher Trevor Rusnak allowed one run on three hits, striking out five batters in 4 1/3 innings.

The Rockets were led by Catcher Earnest with three hits, including a double, and an RBI. Wilhelm had one hit and two RBIs, while Chase Smith, Garrett Chesney and Jack Yonkman each added a hit for R-P.

Holden Earnest suffered the loss from the mound, giving up five runs on four hits in 1/3 of an inning. Reeths-Puffer starter Brayden Mitchelson allowed five runs on four hits while striking out four batters in 6 2/3 innings.
