Fruitport’s Payton Flores has continued to push himself and improve in his events all season.

He had been in the top six in the discus competition at track and field meets for weeks, then finished third against Hudsonville Unity Christian.

On Tuesday Flores finally broke through, winning the discus with a personal record of 127 feet, 10 inches.

Flores’ success was one of several bright spots for the Trojan boys at Spring Lake, where they lost the overall meet by a score of 84-53.

Fruitport’s Andrew Fielstra won the shot put competition with a throw of 38 feet, 10.75 inches. Flores finished second in the shot put with a toss of 38 feet, 7.75 inches.

Ethan Horan won the high jump with a personal record of 5 feet, 10 inches, Alex Wilber won the pole vault by clearing 9 feet, 6 inches, and Nathan Carlisle continued his hot streak in the long jump, finishing first with a personal record of 20 feet, 5.5 inches.

The Trojans’ 4X100-meter relay team of Carlisle, Fielstra, Nash Cooper and Kayden Beardsley also took first place.

“Although we had a small handful of first place finishes, we had a lot of success today,” said Fruitport boys coach Tim McKeeby. “Our athletes were focused on working hard and setting new personal records. We had a lot of second and third place finishes that included personal records being set.

“Our season is winding down quickly and we are locked in at finishing strong.”
