A loss is a loss, but after a rough eight-point defeat at Spring Lake on Monday, the Fruitport soccer team took some solace in a much closer result on Wednesday.
The Trojans fell to a very good Grand Rapids West Catholic squad 2-1.
West Catholic scored first, about seven minutes into the game, then Fruitport’s Mikayla Belasco evened things up with a goal with 26 minutes left in the first half. Jorja Blackmer assisted on the goal.
[1]West Catholic scored the go-ahead goal about 10 minutes into the second half and the Trojans were not able to find the equalizer.
“I was very proud of the girls in a bounce-back game,” said Fruitport Coach Chris Belasco. “As a team we really stepped up and played at a high level. The girls knew coming into this matchup that West Catholic was a very good team and we needed to step up to the challenge.
“It wasn’t the result we wanted on the scoreboard, but we are putting pieces together and growing as a team, and showed how competitive we really can be.”
The Trojans, now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in O-K Blue conference play, will host Ludington on Saturday morning at home.
