The Ludington boys basketball team suffered a heartbreaking end to its season on Monday with a 62-61 loss to Big Rapids in the first round of Division 2 districts.
The Orioles overcame a seven-point deficit in the fourth quarter and led 60-57 with 2:40 remaining. Big Rapids tied the score with a triple, then took a 62-60 lead with 48 seconds left on the clock.
Ludington’s Matthew Westhouse made one of two free throws with nine seconds left, but then the Orioles missed a late free throw and a three-point attempt at the buzzer.
David Shillinger finished with 15 points for the Orioles while Westhouse added 14 and Gage Jones had 13. Dawson Dunn paced Big Rapids with 19 points.
Ludington finished the season with a 20-3 record and a share of the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division title.
