Fruitport Calvary Christian defeats Muskegon Heights 59-46, captures first ever district title in boys basketball

History was made at Fruitport Calvary Christian on Friday night when the boys basketball team won its first district title in school history.

The Eagles earned the trophy by defeating Muskegon Heights 59-46 in a Division 4 district championship contest.

Fruitport Calvary is now 15-9 overall on the season and will face Lansing Christian on Monday at Fowler in the regional semifinals.

The Eagles sealed the victory at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, making 14-of-20 attempts from the charity line.

Muskegon Heights jumped out to a 12-10 first quarter lead behind Jaquan Matthews’ eight points.

Bradley Richards scored all 10 points in the first quarter for Fruitport Calvary.

The Eagles overcame an early six-point second quarter deficit and outscored Muskegon Heights 16-10 to take a 26-22 lead at halftime.

Fruitport Calvary outscored the Tigers 15-11 in the third quarter and led 41-33 heading into the fourth.

The Eagles kept their foot on the gas pedal in the final stanza, outscoring Muskegon Heights by an 18-13 margin.

“We are so proud of our boys for how they grew together as a close-knit unit, and for how they were so determined to keep fighting both tonight and against Muskegon Catholic on Wednesday night,” said Fruitport Calvary coach Brad Richards.  “We love these boys, and their time and dedication to excellence really was tested by fire this year, and they just kept battling.”

Richards paced the Eagles with 26 points and 15 rebounds while Gabe VanBaale added 15 points and 13 rebounds. Quinn Swanson chipped in with nine points and Ben Pollock dished out nine assists.

The Tigers were led by Matthews with 14 points.    [3]
