Fruitport’s Brady French stole home in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday, giving the Fruitport baseball team an exciting 10-9 victory over Montague in the Trojans’ season opener.
French reached base with a double, then ended up stealing home in a daring move to end the long extra-inning game.
The dramatic ending capped a great game for French, who led Fruitport with three hits.
Pitcher Ryan Bosch started the game for Fruitport, tossing two innings while allowing three runs and striking out six. Relief pitcher Braxton Ward got the win, keeping Montague scoreless while allowing one hit on 1 1/3 innings. Christian Kennedy and Tommy Anderson also helped close out the game in relief.
[1]Cody Nash reached base twice with a hit and a walk for Fruitport while Jax Flynn walked twice. Overall the Trojans had 10 hits in the game.
Fruitport had to overcome spotty defense to get the victory after committing 10 errors.
Nick Moss, Chase Gowell and Eli Petersen each had multiple hits for Montague.
“This was a great team win with many players contributing in different areas,” said Fruitport Coach Nick Reed. “We are most pleased about how our kids never gave up when we were down. We had some tough errors but we battled and overcame a lot and just stayed in the moment and didn’t let the last play beat us.”
