Fruitport girls basketball team gives Unity Christian a run for its money, but falls in final regular season game

The Fruitport girls basketball team played one of its best games of the season on Friday but fell short against Hudsonville Unity Christian, 62-30.

The Trojans trailed 16-6 after the opening quarter and 27-12 at halftime. Fruitport went on a 17-14 third quarter run and cut its deficit to 41-29 heading into the fourth.

Fruitport finished the regular season with a 4-18 overall record and an 0-14 mark in the very tough O-K Blue conference.

It was Senior Night for Fruitport basketball, and the Trojans honored their four departing players – Kadence Springstead, Auebre Johnson, Mikayla Belasco and Olive Staal.

“We played the best game we have all year,” said Fruitport coach Brian Packard. “We stuck right with them until the fourth, then they pulled away.

“Our seniors have worked so hard all year and they deserve to play well and to win. They played well, worked hard and fought till the end. I love this group of girls.”

Ash Olson paced Fruitport offensively with 14 points while Johnson scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds.

Fruitport will open Division 2 district tournament play on Monday against Allendale at Allendale High School at 5:30 p.m. [2]
