The Fruitport competitive cheer team successfully defended its home turf on Saturday, capturing the championship over five other teams in the Fruitport Invitational.

The Trojans won the title with a team score of 700.5, their highest of the season so far.

Mason County Central finished second with 683.38 and Muskegon was third with 659.68.

Fruitport had a 219.5 in Round 1 (execution), 190.16 in Round 2 (overall skills) and a season-high 290.9 in Round 3 (stunting).

“This team has pushed through so much this season and continues to come out stronger,” said Fruitport Coach Saqora Conklin. “Our goal this season was to break 700, and today we hit that goal. It’s an amazing feeling to keep growing with this team.”

Conklin credited seniors Kayla Wright and Bella Fett, who competed at home for the last time on Saturday.

“They went out with everything they had,” the coach said. “They’ve put in so much work on the mat this season and have had so much growth. I’m proud to have coached them their senior year.”
