So how did the Fruitport competitive cheer team do on Saturday at the Reeths-Puffer Invitational?
It depends on how you look at it.
The Trojans did well enough against some tough competition in the final standings, finishing in third place in Division 1-2 behind champion Cedar Springs and second place Reeths-Puffer.
But when you compare their performance to what they accomplished in the past, the Trojans were off the charts.
They set a new school record in Round 1 (execution) with 225.5 points and a new school two-round subtotal record with 419.16 points.
The Trojans also had the best Round 3 (stunting) of any of the competing teams in the tournament with a score of 297.10.
“This team has been non-stop working to hit its goals, and each time we get better and better,” said Fruitport Coach Saqora Conklin. “I am so proud of this team.”
Conklin credited three individual team members for their contributions – Zoey Beatty, Madyson Prout and Zoe Grammar.
“You will never see her sitting on the mat (at practice),” the coach said about Beatty. “She’s always drilling and it shows in her performance on the competition mat.”
She said Prout, the only freshman on the team, “fights to earn every spot, and is striving to learn new skills. She has so much talent and I can’t wait to see her grow over the next few years.”
The coach also said Grammar “spends so much of her practices working on her skills to make herself better. Her positive energy really brings this team up!”
Fruitport has now completed the regular season and will move on to Division 2 districts on Saturday at Forest Hills Central High School. A top four season would allow the Trojans to advance to regionals.
