The Fruitport competitive cheer team’s season will be ending a little sooner than what the Trojans had hoped.

They finished in fifth place at Saturday’s Division 2 district tournament at Forest Hills Northern High School, one spot short of qualifying for regionals.

Fruitport scored 223.8 in Round 1, a season-high 194.6 in Round 2 and 288.7 in Round 3, for a total score of 707.1

Reeths-Puffer won the event, followed by Cedar Springs, Forest Hills Northern, Northview, Fruitport and Spring Lake.

“We practiced hard all week,” said Fruitport Coach Saqora Conklin. “The girls put everything on the mat and performed so well. This team is driven and is already excited for next year!’

Conklin gave individual credit to several team members, including Mackenzie Turpin for hard work and dedication, Savanna Anderson for her growth this season, and sophomore flyers Gracie Ferrell and Reana Norbotten.

“They execute so well together, they have so much energy and they have found a way to really connect in Round 3 in the air,” the coach said about Ferrell and Norbotten.

The Trojans will finish their season on Wednesday at the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association Tournament at Muskegon High School.
