FRUITPORT — Fruitport’s boys basketball team came into Friday night’s game with Coopersville riding a hot streak, but cold shooting brought that to a halt.

The Trojans struggled to score for much of the night while allowing a pair of big Coopersville scoring runs in a 48-33 loss to the Broncos.

Fruitport fell behind by 15 points early, rallied to get within two points, then allowed another big run and couldn’t recover a second time.

Fruitport Coach Steve Erny said Coopersville’s length, rotations and ability to take away easy baskets make it difficult to score against the Broncos’ 2-3 zone defense.

“Coopersville is a really good team,” Erny said. “They tend to go on little runs because they’re a hard team to score against consistently. I thought we played especially hard the whole first half, and even halfway through the third quarter. I think through various reasons or whatever, we just couldn’t sustain it.”

Fruitport’s defense played very well in the first half, allowing just 18 points and forcing around a dozen turnovers, but the offense couldn’t take advantage, scoring just 12 points by halftime.

“We just couldn’t convert that into a couple buckets,” Erny said of the defensive effort. “A lot of our games this year, when we play that well defensively, we’re able to hit a couple shots on the other end, and that’s when we’re able to pull away on teams. We just couldn’t do it tonight.”

The loss snaps a four-game win streak for the Trojans. Fruitport is now 10-6 on the year, including 6-4 in the O-K Blue Conference.

The Trojans have a quick turnaround for their next game, a rescheduled date with Fremont at home on Monday. That will be followed by a trip to conference-leading Hamilton on Tuesday.

“I think we’ll be able to pick the pieces up from this loss,” Erny said. “We go on a four-game win streak and then lose a game. I think it’s important to keep things in perspective and keep trying to get better.

“Opportunities are going to be there for a bounce-back, and that’s what we’re focused on.”

Coopersville led 10-3 at the end of the first quarter, then scored the first eight points of the second to lead 18-3 with six minutes left in the first half.

Fruitport’s defense turned up the pressure to hold Coopersville scoreless the rest of the half, and the Trojans pulled within 18-12 at halftime.

Fruitport opened the second half on a 7-3 run to close the gap to 21-19 with 4:54 left in the third before Coopersville unloaded another run.

The Broncos scored the next 16 points – including six on one possession due to a technical foul – to blow the game open.

Coopersville led 39-22 at the end of the third. Fruitport outscored Coopersville 11-9 in the fourth.

Andrew Spyke led Fruitport with 10 points and had a handful of rebounds and blocked shots. Collin Jolman scored eight points, Bode Anspach had six, DayDay Williams scored five and Kyle Burke chipped in four.
