The Fruitport boys bowling team has only lost one conference match this season, to O-K Blue rival Hudsonville Unity Christian.

While most teams would consider just one loss to be pretty good, Fruitport Coach Mike Weaver was not happy with it.

He kept the date for the rematch with Unity Christian circled on his calendar, and kept reminding his bowlers that it was coming up.

The Trojans’ opportunity for revenge finally arrived on Wednesday, and they made the most of it, plowing past Unity Christian 27-3.

The victory very nearly sewed up a third straight O-K Blue conference championship for Fruitport.

The Trojans have now completed all of their conference dual matches, and are down to the postseason conference tournament, scheduled for Jan. 18.

Barring a complete collapse, Fruitport should sew up another conference title that day.

“It’s been on my schedule, and I’ve been talking to the kids quite a bit about it since they beat us,” said Weaver, whose team is 10-2 overall in dual matches. “It was a priority for us to be who we’re supposed to be, and we were.”

The Trojans put on quite a show, sweeping both baker games from Unity Christian to earn all 10 possible points, then winning both of the regular games while breaking the 1,000-pin mark in both.

Fruitport won the first regular game 1,003-975, earning four team points. Three Trojans also picked up single points for winning their head-to-head matches – Gage Wadland (who bowled a 247), Elijah Aldridge (214) and Bradon Krohn (182).

The Trojans won the second regular game 1.039-904, picking up another four team points. Four Fruitport bowlers earned single points for individual wins – Jray Conlkin (246), Wadland (226), Aldridge (203) and Krohn (201).

Conklin, Wadland and Krohn are currently the top three boys bowlers in the O-K Blue.

“Those were some really big scores, but we were obviously capable of it,” Coach Weaver said. “The boys just put it all together. It was awesome. They were really ready to bowl. I can’t say anything but great things about them.”

The Fruitport girls had a more difficult time, falling to Unity Christian 28-2.
