The Fruitport boys bowling team has qualified for the state finals.

The Trojans, who have always been good in recent years but never managed to make it past regionals, got over that hurdle on Saturday by finishing in third place at the Division 2 regional tournament at the Westgate Bowl in Comstock Park.

The top three teams at regionals make the cut, so Fruitport will now compete in the Division 2 team state finals on Friday at the Century Bowl in Waterford, Michigan.

“The boys made it!” said veteran Fruitport Coach Mike Weaver, who is retiring after this season. “We were 120 pins up on everyone going into the last game, and almost gave it all away, but they made it!”

Gage Wadland was the top bowler for Fruitport, tossing a 232-179-411 series in the tournament’s regular games. Bradon Krohn came in at 396 while Jray Conklin bowled a 377, Eli Aldridge scored a 313 and Michael Hanson tossed a 274.

“Jray, Bradon and Gage were on point today, bowling very well,” Coach Weaver said. “Jray was phenomenal in the baker games, doubling in the tenth frame seven out of eight baker games. Gage was the glue that held everything from unraveling in the last game.”

Three Trojans also fared very well in Friday’s individual regionals, finishing in the top 10 to qualify for the individual state finals.

Conklin finished fifth in the boys standings, bowling games of 204, 220, 201, 155, 225 and 199 for a 1,204 series.

Brynna Hanson finished fourth in the girls competition, bowling games of 178, 156, 163, 197, 175 and 243 for a 1,115 score. Raegan Dykstra finished sixth by bowling games of 191, 201, 167, 196, 124 and 173 for a 1,052 series.

Conklin. Hanson and Dykstra will compete in the Division 2 Individual Finals next Saturday in Waterford.

Conklin will be making his first appearance in the state finals. Hanson has qualified three times while Dykstra has qualified twice.
