Fruitport girls basketball team falls to undefeated GR West Catholic in conference play

The Fruitport girls basketball team had a tall order on Friday, playing a powerful Grand Rapids West Catholic squad, and came out on the short end of a 65-25 score on its home court.

West Catholic took control early, grabbing a 19-2 lead at the end of one quarter. The Falcons led 33-6 at halftime and 50-16 through three quarters.

The Trojans dropped to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play. GR West Catholic is now 12-0 and 5-0.

The Trojans played hard and gave it everything they had, according to Coach Brian Packard. They were battling through some adversity after the tragic death of junior varsity player earlier in the week.

“It was a tough night, but we had reason to battle and we did just that,” Packard said. “West Catholic is a great team and we know that. They are skilled at every position, but we didn’t back down.”

Ash Olson, Mackenzie Beardsley and Grace Sweet each scored six points for Fruitport.

The Trojans will visit Spring Lake in a rivalry game on Tuesday.    [2]
