The Muskegon Catholic boys basketball team overcome a late deficit, defeating Western Michigan Christian 41-39 on Friday night.

The Crusaders trailed 39-37 until Sam Kartes tied the game with a hoop under the basketball. MCC scored the game-winning shot on a layup by Chase Willer.

MCC led 14-5 at the end of the opening quarter and 22-11 at halftime.

The Warriors went on a 12-3 third quarter run to cut their deficit to 25-23 entering the fourth quarter.

The Crusaders held on during the final stanza as both teams scored 16 points.

Braden Gustin paced MCC with 13 points and five rebounds, while Bryan Convertini 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Jake Westhoff chipped in with 10 points and Kartes pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Crusaders are now 5-4 on the season.
