Fruitport wresting team maintains its momentum by easily beating West Catholic, Zeeland West in conference action

The Fruitport wrestling team, fresh from its strong showing at last Saturday’s GMAA city tournament, maintained its momentum on Wednesday with a pair of easy conference victories.

The Trojans downed Grand Rapids West Catholic 69-12 and Zeeland West 45-27.

Fruitport had seven wrestlers who won two matches – Kyle Holt, Roan Cooper, Nash Cooper, Hunter Leonard, Trace Pider, Andrew Fielstra and Caleb O’Neal.

Fielstra has been an added plus for the Trojans this season, according to coach Chad Johnson. The standout football player had no prior wrestling experience but came out for the team for his senior year and is doing very well.

“We looked pretty sharp tonight,” said Fruitport coach Chad Johnson. “(Fielstra) wrestled tough, showed a lot of grit and won a big match for us on the tail end of the dual to seal it up for us against Zeeland West.

“Drew is a class act, a hard-nosed athlete, an academic all-stater and a superb teammate. We’re happy he made the decision to give us a shot.”

The Trojans will return to action on Saturday at the Randy Jacobs Memorial Duals at Montague High School. [2]
